Florida Is Cracking Down on Aggressive Drivers
Driving is an activity that requires patience, focus, and a calm mind. When drivers share the road, they need to diligently obey local and state traffic laws and practice respectful driving behaviors. Unfortunately, some people can get frustrated or impatient because of road conditions or the actions of other drivers. As a result, they may start engaging in dangerous aggressive driving behaviors.
According to the American Automobile Association, aggressive driving is responsible for 50% of all traffic fatalities. Aggressive driving, or “road rage,” can motivate a driver to make questionable choices that ultimately disregards the safety of others.
Aggressive driving behaviors include:
- Carelessly weaving through traffic
- Changing lanes without signaling
- Yelling at other drivers
- Honking the car horn at other drivers
- Deliberately running red lights
- Intentionally blocking other vehicles from changing lanes
- Antagonizing other drivers
- Bumping the car against another vehicle
Because aggressive driving has been a significant problem in Florida, concerned lawmakers passed a statute called “Aggressive Careless Driving.” In a recent article posted on the ABC 10 News website, Kathleen Corso, Louis Aguirre and North Miami Attorney Brett Schlacter discuss how Florida Highway Patrol is legally allowed to run “crackdown campaigns” that specifically target aggressive drivers. The goal of these campaigns is to prevent accidents by administering citations to unsafe motorists. According to the report, “Over the course of more than a half-dozen crackdown campaigns, FHP has issued over 80,000 aggressive driving citations.”
During a “crackdown campaign,” a motorist can be ticketed if they commit at least two of these acts:
- Exceeding the posted speed
- Following another vehicle too closely
- Failure to yield the right-of-way
- Violating traffic control and signal devices
- Unsafely of improperly changing lanes
- Improperly passing cars
